How My Mom's Food Affected My Academic Performance.

In the 2022-2023 school year, I was a first-year student in high school. It was a new experience, I could
finally try to live a life like the movies I saw— cobra kai, stranger things, or a show that shows TEEN (my age) partying, drugs, social life, etc... My principal at that time was extremely poor at keeping and regulating an academic environment. I remember there were 18 fights in one day, multiple students bringing guns, and we had a hard lockdown every day. We had to eat lunch in the classroom because of the hard lockdowns. And to marinate these poor regulations, people could skip fifty times without getting sanctioned. My school was 200 feet away from Burger King, planet fitness, domino pizza, and many more. This environment made it easy for people to skip, especially freshmen. Of course, I indulge in corruption— It is not my fault though— It is theirs, the principle, and the staff. I do not have the power to change what I see, so whatever is whatever. Simply, and scientifically, our environment controls our behaviors.

I gained a 3.2 gpa in my first semester, and I perceived that result as a failure. I saw my friends with higher GPAs than me. I got jealous, and out of spite, I set out to carry out the biggest academic performance for the following year. I completely isolated myself. Initially, it felt nice (like drugs)– but from that point my fate was already decided(depression). Andrew Tate was a substantial influence on me, and I could say the same for others. I firmly use Andrew Tate ideas because I wanted to be better than my friends and everybody—I felt I had great potential, I would tell myself: “bro I have a F@#$%& potential, these people aren’t ready to see, I’m going to disappear for 1 year and they won’t recognize me…. Just wait.” I started using concepts like being cold hearted, and showing no emotions in your face, so people are intimidated; this makes people less likely to approach me– that is what I wanted. So, I kept watching all the motivational/educational YouTube videos that propel the idea of why isolation is good for me (I really liked ideas like: disappearing for 1 year *sigh*).

Each day I consistently watched these videos, but my studying skills were genuinely not it. Food played a role. As a freshman in high school–a 14-year-old– we do not expect them to master the art of nutrition. Would you expect that from me? Of course not. Walk with me, my lunch is at 10:30 AM– is that even lunch? When I get on the bus home, I usually visualize the tasty food at home and conceptualize my studying afterward. I do not even know why I am conceptualizing studying. The food is going to kill my day anyway. So, boom, I get to the front door of my house. Somehow, someway, every day when I try unlocking the door, I suddenly need to pee. I could not understand why it happened. Maybe because I was antsy about the ‘food’ behind the door. As soon as I bust the door open, I go straight to the bathroom. I do my thing and get out. I would feel fresh, and happy to eat something extraordinary. Rice is the foundation all the time, and there's multiple sauces I can choose to describe. For example, there is a sauce I REALLY like: “thombo”--- you will not find it on google because it is a sauce from my village, so it is very foreign. However, the food's primary ingredient is eggplant, with some palm oil, and meat.

When I was in Africa before coming here, everything was limited. I could not eat meat because we could not afford it. We could only eat fish, and that was limited as well. However, now, everything has been exaggerated; Plenty of meat, fish, and chicken in every dish. For example: I used to eat thombo with fish all the time, now the combination has been exaggerated to meat, sometimes both. So, every day when suddenly, I must pee when I am opening the door, that shows that I get very antsy when I am standing next to a building with gold inside. Additionally, the sauce is too good to a degree where I put so much rice, just so I could keep eating the sauce. For example, we have these big spoons at home, I would usually do 4 full scoops with it; When my mom sees my plate, she opens her mouth in shock and says, “you are going to eat all that” and “you eat so much and you are not even big."

Generally, eating so much causes sluggishness— I did not know this back then. By the time I sit to do my work, I start to feel very sleepy; my brains would simply not cooperate. I mean, I just came from a potent drug. Now I must sit and do very tedious work for hours. Hence, I tell myself, “Since you're feeling sleepy, just take a quick nap, maybe one and a half hours, and come back, and complete EVERYTHING!.” No, of course it does not go as planned. Even though my alarm rings after one hour, I do not wake up because I do not even hear the alarm, the nap is too deep. When I finally woke up at 8pm, where others used their time effectively, I became aware of the work I got to do, but sometimes I just could not do it. On top of missing study sessions or homework, I destroy my sleep schedule.

I read a book called “Atomic Habit.” This book reformed my thinking. The book explains how to break unhealthy habits and how to build good habits and the science behind it. I learned that after eating big food like I did, it would result in sluggishness. Therefore, I stopped eating before doing important work. Especially in the morning, not eating can increase attention. I now know how to approach habits. Prime environment is a concept that is good as well: doing good habits in the present to avoid bad ones in the future. Eating well in the present to focus on work later.

In conclusion, I faced many challenges in proving to my ex-friends and everybody why I am better. In the end, they did better than me academically. I ignore socializing which multiplied into negative aspects of my life. Although food played a role, I still lack consistency; boredom (instead of doing homework, I doom scroll). In addition, loneliness played a factor, but I ignored it. Andrew Tate said “I would be considered a girl if I get depressed” or “complained about being lonely”.

  1. Hi Gerard! I enjoyed reading your story about how food affected your daily life and your academic performance. I especially liked the part about coming home and looking forward to the food your mom made. It reminded me of my own experience because Vietnamese food also make me think about my mom, my family and my life in Vietnam. I understand how food from home can give us comfort and make us feel connected to our family. I also liked how you realized that your eating habits affected your studying and tried to make some changes.
You did a great job connecting food, family and your experience as a student. Thank you for sharing your story with us!

  2. I'd never thought about it that way, but food plays a significant role in our productivity. It might seem obvious, but we often don't even consider it. I feel like I don't eat healthily, and it's hard for me to get up in the morning. I have a lot of caffeine in my system, and sometimes I'd rather take a nap or prolong what I should have finished from the start. I'm glad you found a reason to be the best version of yourself, but keep in mind that not everyone is bad or envious, and if you're friends with someone, they'll always want what's best for you. Choose your battles and your friendships wisely, and you'll be great.
